MOE held the Outstanding Exemplar Awards Ceremony, affirming 25 outstanding class mentors (out of over 100) and 36 outstanding university companions (out of over 2,500) from 23 partner universities nationwide. The program encourages higher education institutions to nurture young teachers to help children in rural areas. Tunghai University has been organizing the "Digit Companions for Learning Program" for over a decade. This year, Tunghai not only received the Outstanding Exemplar Award for nine consecutive years but also achieves a record of having all participating students and mentors winning awards. Professor Chao-Tung Yang, who leads the program, mentioned that each semester, Tunghai University guides nearly a hundred students from over 30 departments to mentor elementary school students in rural areas, integrating information technology into learning. Based on companionship and learning, the program implements the core values of "Life accompanies life and teaches life," enhancing the diverse perspectives and learning experiences between university and elementary school companions.
Prof. Chao-Tung Yang, the Director of Office of Library and Information Service, further pointed out that Bo-Yan Chen, a student from the Department of Computer Science, and Che-Chen Chang, a student from the Department of Economics, served as the core mentors of university companions and actively provided teaching advice and cared about the teaching, contributing significantly to narrowing the digital gap between urban and rural areas. Their dedication and effort led to the winning of the MOE 2023 Outstanding Class Mentor Award. Chi-Yu Lien, a student from the Department of History, and Shu-Hua Yang, a student from the Department of Food Science, enriched the perspectives and lives of their elementary school companions through caring remote teaching. They also actively followed issues related to under-privileged groups and developed an inclusive and compassionate view of society, winning themselves the Outstanding University Companion Award.
